PATCH response to PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ found in bandage products

Recent new articles have shed light on concerns of PFAS being used in first-aid products such as bandages. Mamavation used an EPA-certified laboratory to independently test for indications of PFAS in 40 bandages and found 26 to contain organic fluorine which is an indicator of forever chemicals known as PFAS.

What is PFAS?

PFAS chemicals were created to resist stains, heat, oil, water and grease and are used in products like non-stick cookware, textiles and food packaging. In the case of bandages it is believed they are used to make the product waterproof.

Linda Birnbaum (Scientist Emeritus and Former Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program) said in response to the results found in the testing “Because bandages are placed upon open wounds, it’s troubling to learn that they may be also exposing children and adults to PFAS.”

As part of this testing our Patch Bamboo Bandages for Kids with Coconut Oil were included and were found to be non-detect for organic fluorine on both the absorbent pad and sticky flaps of the bandages.

We use the same organic bamboo, non-toxic adhesive and paper based sticky flaps across our entire bandage range. You can be confident buying Patch Bandages knowing that they are safe for you and your family.
